When in November of 1992 a few young, long-haired dudes gathered up as the "youth initiative 'Brüggsche'" (i.e. "small bridge") nobody dared to believe that this group would be called "the second pillar of the Babenhausen youth work" by the local mayor three and a half years later. The aim of the group of volunteers was to fill up the vacuum in the local youth culture and to build up a place where the young people of their small town could meet without commercial or governmental restrictions. This turned into the invention of the "Youth Café 'unnerm Brüggsche'" after intensive deliberations with the local government. According to this new purpose approximately twenty young people completely reconditioned a cellar space inside the youth club of the Babenhausen town hall during a work period of five-months. The initialization- party was at the last school day before summer holidays 1993. Meanwhile we joined the "BDP", the "German Boyscouts Association", which is a liberal, multicultural and progressive youth organisation- despite of it's strange sounding name. The BDP provides contacts and experiences from all over Hessen and Germany while allowing a wide range of self- determinated activities. Particularly in the initial phase this was a optimal, nescessary and unpayable support. Since 1994 there is also the "BDP Kinderkiste", that is taking care for primary school pupils of working parents as full-time project. In the summer of 1995 the use of the urban spaces as a youth café by the BDP was finally legitimized by a use contract. Since 1996 the evening shows of the commune's cinema by the city of Babenhausen are executed by a BDP working group in the BDP youth café. The numbers of visitors multiplied since then, not just according to the pleasant environment. As well in 1996 the BDP and the local bookstore "auslese" founded the cultural initiative "ANORAK" (i.e. "AlterNatively ORgAnized Culture"), which voluntaryly organizes cultural events, that could not take place in Babenhausen on a commercial level. 1997 was the year of the foundation of the female theatre group "Thalaia". It earned the award of the hessian ministry for education and culture in 1999. In the same year the childrens group "WuTz" founded and started their weekly meetings in the BDP- garden, which is provided free of charge by a farmer for our purposes. Since then we also use the BDP garden, where our gardening group, summer partys and huge, impenetrable plants take place. In 1999, the concert- group started to rock the house, which turned out to be a very nice live music club. Many different bands show up and satisfy the special taste of music lovers, as we are. November 2000: The climbing group is founded to start hanging around weekly, even on walls and rocks. In January 2001 we decided to break up our managing commitete and pass the functions on to the "braced plenary meeting". In September 2001 we founded the "ex-com" Group, which is responsible for the managing of the youth café and special events, such as the commune's cinema.
In the short time of our existence we made ourselves a name with a varied and unique program, as well outside the boundaries of Babenhausen. Through our work, Babenhausen became well known all over the country, not just inside the BDP. |
